Woking Road shuts overnight from Monday 5 October for three weeks of junction works, 9pm to 6am. No trains through Guildford on 10, 11 and 18 October.
The new disruption in Guildford next week is on Woking Road. From Monday 5 October it closes overnight, 9pm to 6am, between Jacobs Well Road and Moorfield Road, the entrance to the Slyfield Industrial Estate. The council’s programme runs those night closures through to 23 October, with more to follow, so the roundabout at Woodlands Road can become a four-way junction with traffic lights.
Here is the rest of the Guildford roadworks and travel picture for the next three weeks:
- Tonight, Friday 2 October: the M25 anticlockwise link from Junction 10 to the A3 northbound is closed, 11pm to 5.30am
- Monday 5 October, night: the A3 northbound Hogs Back entry slip closes, and so does the A3 northbound link onto the M25 clockwise at Wisley
- The Onslow Street bus stops stay out of use, with the electricity works there now listed to 8 October
- The 478 bus no longer serves Effingham Common Road and Forest Road because of a problem with the railway bridge at Effingham Junction
- Guildford Road in Leatherhead closed until about 17 October, diverting the 478 and 479 buses
- Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October: the lines in the Guildford area close all weekend, on South Western Railway and on the North Downs line
- Sunday 18 October: the Guildford area closes to trains again, all day
The roads were rechecked against National Highways, Surrey County Council and the council’s Weyside project site on 2 October 2026. The rail detail was checked against the operators on 28 September.
Woking Road: three weeks of night closures from Monday
Guildford Borough Council is replacing the roundabout at the Woodlands Road junction on the A320 Woking Road with a signal-controlled four-way junction. It is also adding lanes and a signalled pedestrian crossing at the Moorfield Road junction, the way into the Slyfield Industrial Estate. Both are part of the Weyside Urban Village regeneration, and work began in February (Guildford Borough Council).
The council’s project site published the next phase on 30 September. These are the planned overnight closures of Woking Road (Weyside Urban Village):
| Nights | What is being done |
|---|---|
| Mon 5 to Fri 9 October | New pedestrian islands between Jacobs Well Road and Moorfield Road |
| Mon 12 to Fri 16 October | Upgrading the existing pedestrian crossing, southbound side |
| Mon 19 to Fri 23 October | Finishing the crossing upgrade, northbound side |
| Mon 26 to Tue 27 October | Preparing for the new signalised junction outside Hazel Court |
| Wed 28 to Fri 30 October | More preparatory work for the junction |
| Mon 16 to Fri 20 November | More preparatory work for the junction |
Every closure runs from 9pm to 6am, and the traffic management comes off each morning. Diversions are signed, and the routes are posted on one.network. The new traffic signals are expected to go in from late November into mid-December, subject to approvals. The county’s street works register lists the first block of work on Woking Road for 4 to 9 October (Surrey County Council).
The council says the programme can still move because of weather, ground conditions or emergency utility work. If you drive Woking Road late at night, check the project page before each week.
This week on the A3 and the M25
National Highways’ 7-day closure report now covers Thursday 1 to Wednesday 7 October. For Guildford, what is left of it falls on these nights:
- Tonight, Friday 2 October, 11pm to 5.30am: the M25 anticlockwise link road from Junction 10 to the A3 northbound at Wisley closes for maintenance.
- Monday 5 October, 9pm to 6am: the A3 northbound Hogs Back entry slip closes for sign maintenance.
- Monday 5 October, 10pm to 5.30am: the A3 northbound link from Wisley interchange to the M25 clockwise at Junction 10 closes for vegetation clearance.
- Tuesday 6 October, 10pm to 5.30am: the M25 anticlockwise link from Junction 10 to the A3 northbound closes again, also for vegetation clearance.
The M25 clockwise closure between Junctions 9 and 10 that last week’s report listed for Monday 5 October is not in this one. Treat it as dropped unless it reappears.
Further south, the A3 northbound is closed overnight at Longmoor in Hampshire, about 20 miles south-west, from Monday to Wednesday, part of a resurfacing scheme listed as running from the Hogs Back to Longmoor. No closures on the Guildford stretch of that scheme are listed this week.
The Dennis to Stoke closures of 28 and 29 September have not been repeated. Previous full closures of that stretch have been signed through Guildford town centre.
The report is a spreadsheet National Highways replaces every week, and it had a new file address again when we checked on 2 October. The link above always resolves to the current seven days. Closures can be added or dropped at short notice.
Dennis Roundabout: the first structures closure since August
National Highways is repairing the concrete bridges at the A3/A322 Dennis Roundabout, the interchange at the north-west corner of the town. The scheme runs from May to December 2026. It covers bridge deck refurbishment, re-waterproofing, replacement of bridge joints and barriers, and resurfacing of the A3 between Dennis Roundabout and Woodenbridge footbridge (National Highways scheme page).
The Monday and Tuesday night closures of 28 and 29 September were the first listed under that scheme’s wording since the August programme ended. They did not appear on the scheme page. That page’s most recent update was still dated 3 August when we checked on 28 September, eight weeks unchanged, and it lists nothing beyond 25 August. The weekly closure report is the only place the new dates appear.
What continues until the work ends in December:
- a lane on the west side of Dennis Roundabout is closed around the clock
- the roundabout’s footpath is closed, with pedestrians diverted via Woodenbridge footbridge
More closures are likely before December, because the deck work needs the road shut. National Highways has run these in batches: overnight closures through June, full weekend closures in July, and a mixture in August.
Friary bus station: the Onslow Street stops are still out of use
The rebuild of Guildford Friary bus station began on Tuesday 1 September. The temporary stops in the Onslow Street bus lane went out of use on 3 September because of emergency works by UK Power Networks. Passengers for services 18, 46, 91 and 65 are told to use stand 2 inside the bus station instead (Surrey County Council).
That is still the position. The county’s bus changes page still carried the notice when we checked on 2 October. The UK Power Networks job on Onslow Street has been extended a third time. The county’s street works register now lists it to 8 October, after end dates of 16 September, 25 September and 2 October. Until the county says the stops have reopened, use stand 2.
The rest of phase 1 stands: the seven Commercial Road stands are closed, stands 3 to 15 stay open with services moved between them, and temporary stops are in use on North Street outside and opposite the library. Pedestrian access to the bus station is maintained.
Where to find your bus, according to the county council’s stand list:
- Stand 3: 70, 71, 72 (Artington park and ride)
- Stand 4: 24, 32, 42
- Stand 5: 6
- Stand 6: 34, 35
- Stand 7: 53, 63
- Stands 8 to 14: 2, 20, 1, 4, 5 and 478, 3, 7 respectively
- Stand 15: 479, 715
- North Street, outside the library (stops H and J): 8, 462, 463, 18 for Merrow, and 23, 25, 300 for Merrow park and ride, alighting only
- North Street, opposite the library (stops K and L): the same routes, boarding out of town
- Onslow Street bus lane (stops M and N): normally 46, 65, 18 for Onslow, 28, 91 on Sundays, and 625, but these stops are suspended; use stand 2
Phase 2 starts at the end of October 2026, when the stand allocations change again. Parts of North Street and the southern end of Commercial Road close to traffic. Buses then enter the station from a new northern entrance on Woodbridge Road, and two new stands are built on Commercial Road. A third phase follows in January 2027, and the county council expects the project to finish in late 2027. The bus station work runs alongside the borough’s North Street pedestrianisation, which starts this autumn.
Leatherhead: Guildford Road shut for three weeks
Guildford Road in Leatherhead, about 12 miles east of Guildford, is closed at its junction with Waterway Road from Monday 28 September until about Saturday 17 October. Surrey County Council is doing drainage improvement works there (temporary bus changes).
It matters on this side of the county because of the buses. The Reptons 478 and the Falcon 479 both divert in both directions via Leret Way, The Crescent, Church Street, Gimcrack Hill and Dorking Road, then use the A246 towards Bocketts Farm roundabout. The 479 also runs via Hawks Hill towards Leatherhead Leisure Centre and Fetcham. The London 465 is diverted the same way.
Effingham: the 478 stops short of Effingham Common
Since Thursday 24 September the Reptons 478 has not served Effingham Common Road or Forest Road. Surrey County Council puts it down to “operational issues regarding the railway bridge at Effingham Junction”. The bus diverts via the A246 Guildford Road and Ockham Road South in both directions, so the stops on those two roads are not served. The county says it will update the entry as more is known and gives no end date (temporary bus changes).
East Lane in West Horsley, closed for emergency power works from 17 September, has come off both the county’s bus changes page and the street works register. The county has not published a reopening statement.
In Farnham, about ten miles west, East Street is closed eastbound until 12 October, 8pm to 4am on weeknights, for utility works. Stagecoach’s service 65 towards Guildford diverts via South Street and the A31 Farnham bypass on those evenings, and cannot serve Woolmead Road, East Street, Kimbers Lane, Farnham Hospital South or Shepherd and Flock roundabout. From 13 October to 22 October the closure swaps to the westbound direction and the diversions change again.
Street works listed for the next fortnight
Surrey County Council lists every live and planned street work in the borough on its roadworks in your area page. Notable entries on its Guildford list, checked on 2 October:
- High Street, Castle ward: highways improvement works now listed to 7 October, and Virgin Media works from 4 to 6 October
- Market Street: UK Power Networks electricity works from 1 to 7 October
- North Street: UK Power Networks electricity works to 6 October, on top of the private highways improvement works already running there
- Onslow Street: UK Power Networks electricity works to 8 October, the job keeping the bus lane stops shut
- Woking Road, Worplesdon: private highways improvement works from 4 to 9 October, the first week of the night closures above
- London Road, Burpham: SGN gas works from 1 to 8 October, and London Road, Castle ward: telecoms works from 4 to 11 October
- Epsom Road, Merrow: Thames Water works from 4 to 6 October
- Woodbridge Road, Stoke: Thames Water works to 5 October, alongside the long-running highways works on the same road
- Worplesdon Road, Stoughton South: SGN gas works to 12 October
- Old Epsom Road, Clandon and Horsley: highways improvement works now listed to 7 October
- Portsmouth Road, Send and Lovelace: National Highways works on 5 and 6 October
- Pirbright Road, Normandy: Scottish and Southern electricity works to 17 January 2027, and Guildford Road there to 6 November
- Ash Wharf: Scottish and Southern electricity works on Longacre, Ewins Close and Church View from 5 October to 10 February 2027, and on Wharf Road to 16 October; Harpers Road highways works to 30 October
- Long-running jobs that will still be there in the autumn: SGN gas works on Wodeland Avenue (to 19 January 2027, with a second job to 16 October), Farnham Road at St Nicolas (to 5 December) and Horsham Road at Shalford (to 4 December); private highways improvement works on Westfield Road (to 6 November), Woodbridge Road and Leapale Road (to 30 October), North Street (to 30 October and 1 February 2027) and Woking Road at Worplesdon (to 1 March 2027); and the Commercial Road highways improvement works listed through to 27 March 2027
The list changes weekly and the council’s own caveat is that works can be postponed. Check the borough page before assuming your street is clear.
Two High Street closures in early October
Guildford Borough Council publishes its town-centre event closures months ahead, in a table of dates, timings and the exact roads (Guildford Borough Council). Two land in the next fortnight:
- Tuesday 6 October, 8am to 5pm: the farmers’ market closes the High Street from Quarry Street to the North Street and Chertsey Street junction, plus The Shambles, Chapel Street and Market Street.
- Friday 9 October, 8.30am to 12.30pm: the Service for the Judiciary closes the same stretch of High Street and its side roads, excluding Quarry Street and North Street or Chertsey Street.
After that the table jumps to 1 November for the Arts and Makers Market, and 15 November for the Festive Family Fun Day.
Trains: a normal week, then two weekends without them
This weekend, Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October, is mostly clear for Guildford. The one change is on the Portsmouth line: Waterloo to Portsmouth via Guildford trains terminate at Havant on both days, with buses on to Portsmouth (SWR October works).
Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October is the big one. The lines in the Guildford area close for the whole weekend for maintenance:
- Portsmouth main line: on the Saturday, Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour trains terminate at Woking and the Portsmouth and Southsea trains start from Haslemere, with buses between Woking and Haslemere via Guildford. On the Sunday some terminate at Woking and some start from Haslemere, with the same buses.
- Cobham and Epsom lines: Waterloo to Guildford services terminate at Effingham Junction on both days, with buses on to Guildford.
- Sunday stopping service: Waterloo to Guildford via Woking trains terminate at Woking, with buses calling at Worplesdon.
- Farnham and Ascot lines: Guildford to Farnham via Aldershot does not run on the Saturday, and Guildford to Ascot starts from Aldershot on the Sunday, with buses to Guildford both days.
- North Downs line: GWR replaces trains with buses between North Camp and Gatwick Airport, stopping only at Guildford, and between North Camp and Redhill calling at all stations except Ash and Wanborough. GWR trains still run between Reading and Ash (GWR planned engineering).
Sunday 18 October closes the Guildford area again, all day. SWR has now published the same pattern as the Sunday before: buses between Woking and Haslemere via Guildford, the Woking stopping service ending at Woking with buses via Worplesdon, the Cobham and Epsom line trains ending at Effingham Junction, and Guildford to Ascot starting from Aldershot. GWR buses the North Downs line that day on the 10 and 11 October pattern.
Sunday 25 October closes the line south instead. Waterloo to Portsmouth via Guildford trains terminate at Guildford, with buses between Guildford and Petersfield via Haslemere. On the North Downs line, GWR runs buses non-stop between Guildford and Gatwick Airport, between Guildford and Redhill via Gomshall and Dorking, and between Guildford, Shalford, Chilworth and Gomshall. GWR trains still run between Reading and Guildford that day.
Times and fares for the main line are in the Guildford to London trains guide.
The evergreen escape route: park and ride
When the gyratory is stuffed, the park and ride is the reliable way in. Surrey County Council runs Guildford Glide from two sites, and the deal is the same at both: parking is free, you pay for the bus (Surrey County Council):
- Artington (south of the town, off the A3100): services 70, 71 and 72, seven days a week, roughly every 20 minutes, about 8 minutes to the centre.
- Merrow (east, off the A25): service 300, Monday to Saturday, 7.30am to 7.45pm, roughly every 30 minutes, about 12 minutes in.
Fares: a £4 day ticket, singles at £2.20 from Artington or £2.60 from Merrow, a 7-day MegaRider at £16 and a 28-day at £56, and up to two under-16s travel free with each adult. The former Spectrum and Onslow park and ride sites are suspended, so do not plan around them. Since 1 September the Artington buses use stand 3 at the bus station and the Merrow 300 uses the North Street stops outside and opposite the library, as listed above.
If you are taking the train instead, the station’s two car parks hold 327 cars between them at £11 to £15.50 for a peak weekday, and there are 378 cycle spaces (SWR station guide). Town-centre car parks and charges are covered in parking in Guildford.
Why the town centre is built the way it is
Guildford’s town-centre traffic runs on a one-way gyratory around the riverside. Easing pressure on it has been the point of a decade of council projects. The Millbrook car park junction was rebuilt in 2018 so exiting cars stop queuing through it. Walnut Tree Close was made one-way to cut rat-running, with cyclists keeping both directions. The wider Walnut Bridge, opened in 2022, links the station to Bedford Wharf on foot without touching a road (Guildford town centre transport package). When an A3 closure pours through the middle of that system, the gyratory is the pinch point. That is why the park and ride sites sit deliberately outside it.

Frequently asked questions
Is Woking Road closed?
Overnight only, from Monday 5 October. Woking Road closes from 9pm to 6am between Jacobs Well Road and Moorfield Road on the nights of 5 to 9 October. The southbound side follows on 12 to 16 October and the northbound side on 19 to 23 October, with more nights in late October and mid-November. Diversions are signed. The traffic lights replacing the Woodlands Road roundabout are expected from late November into mid-December (Weyside Urban Village).
Is the A3 closed at Guildford this week?
Only at night, and only slip roads and links. Tonight, Friday 2 October, the M25 anticlockwise link from Junction 10 to the A3 northbound is closed, 11pm to 5.30am. On Monday 5 October the A3 northbound Hogs Back entry slip closes from 9pm to 6am, and the A3 northbound link onto the M25 clockwise at Junction 10 closes from 10pm. The M25 to A3 northbound link closes again on Tuesday night. No full closures of the A3 around Guildford are listed up to 7 October (National Highways road closure report).
Are the Dennis Roundabout closures finished?
No. The A3 northbound closures between Dennis and Stoke on the nights of 28 and 29 September were the first listed under the scheme’s wording since August, and the scheme itself runs to December 2026. None are listed up to 7 October. A lane on the west side of the roundabout and the footpath stay closed throughout. The scheme page’s own updates were still dated 3 August when we checked on 28 September (National Highways).
What is happening at Guildford bus station?
The Friary bus station is being rebuilt in phases, and phase 1 began on 1 September. The seven stands on Commercial Road are closed, with temporary stops on North Street by the library; the stand-by-stand list is above. The temporary Onslow Street stops went out of use on 3 September for emergency electricity works, which the street works register now shows running to 8 October, so passengers for services 18, 46, 91 and 65 should still use stand 2. Phase 2 starts at the end of October, phase 3 in January 2027, and the whole project is due to finish in late 2027 (Surrey County Council).
Are there train changes at Guildford this week?
Not in Guildford itself this weekend. On Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October, Waterloo to Portsmouth via Guildford trains terminate at Havant, with buses on to Portsmouth (South Western Railway).
When are there no trains at all at Guildford?
On Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October, and again on Sunday 18 October. The lines in the Guildford area close for maintenance on all three days. Buses replace trains between Woking and Haslemere via Guildford, the Cobham and Epsom line trains terminate at Effingham Junction, the Farnham and Ascot services are bused, and on the North Downs line GWR runs buses between North Camp and Gatwick Airport. Allow a great deal longer than usual for any journey through the town on those days (South Western Railway, GWR).
Where is the Guildford park and ride?
Two sites operate: Artington (south, buses every 20 minutes, seven days) and Merrow (east, every 30 minutes, Monday to Saturday). Parking is free; a day ticket on the bus is £4. The Spectrum and Onslow sites are suspended (Surrey County Council).
Closure dates were taken from National Highways’, Surrey County Council’s, Guildford Borough Council’s, South Western Railway’s and GWR’s own pages on 28 September 2026 and can change at short notice. Check the live sources above before you travel.
